When you start to look into some of the other Mesos frameworks, that opens up even more possibilities, especially in the big data space. We saw this as an ideal opportunity to kill two birds with one stone and use the platform not only for running these services, but for building and testing them as well. This allowed us to have a more scalable CI infrastructure. Thankfully, the guys at Ebay had already done some work on integrating Jenkins as a Mesos framework. At the same time, we also realised that we needed to build and package these microservices as well, in a typical CI/CD workflow. When we were building the platform, our initial focus was to support a microservices infrastructure. We are strong advocates of selecting the best tool for the job at hand, whatever that may be. Taylor: There is potential for that, though that was not our initial motivation. Are you trying to make Apollo a 'one-stop-shop' for an organisations infrastructure needs? InfoQ: We see that the listed Apollo use cases are not just microservice-based application workloads, and also include data science scenarios. On top of that Mesos seemed really solid - having already been employed in production at large scale companies such as Apple, Twitter and AirBnB. This was important as for the client we were working with at the time, we had to deploy alongside legacy applications and support stateful services in a private infrastructure. We also found the barrier to entry a bit lower compared to some other PAAS out there. This meant we were able to easily mix running Docker containers, alongside orchestrating basic tasks in the cluster using frameworks like Jenkins and Chronos, which gives you real flexibility. We really liked the fact that Mesos does not make too many assumptions about what you want to run in your cluster, and does a few things really well. Taylor: At the time we evaluated a few other open source technologies in the space. Can we ask why you chose to build on top of this platform? ![]() InfoQ: Apollo is based on the Apache Mesos cluster manager. Please get in touch with us and share your story! We’d be really interested to hear if anyone has successfully deployed the platform in their organisation, or indeed if they need help or advice. The response has been positive so far and we’ve received a few external contributions. Since we were already leveraging other open-source components, this decision made complete sense. At that point we decided to open-source the code and switch to working in a completely open way.Īs engineers, we understand that other developers don’t particularly like proprietary / closed solutions or those that have complete lock in to a particular cloud provider. We quickly realised that what we were building was fairly generic and could be really useful to other people and organisations. Taylor: Initially, we started out building the platform as an internal project to support one of our clients needs. Can we ask what are the motivations for open sourcing the project? InfoQ: It is great to see this kind of IaaS/PaaS application platform being built primarily out in the open. InfoQ caught up with Graham Taylor, a senior engineer at Capgemini UK, and asked several questions about the Apollo project. ![]() The current release of Apollo includes bootstrap scripts for running the platform on Vagrant, AWS and DigitalOcean. Apache Mesos supports several big data frameworks natively, including Spark and Storm, although the documentation states that these are not yet provided as native Apollo plugins. ![]() HAProxy for application container load balancingĪpollo currently supports Mesosphere’s Marathon framework for long-running (micro)services, with support for Apache Aurora and Google’s Kubernetes included as goals on the platform roadmap.Weave for networking of Docker containers.Docker for application container runtimes.Apache Mesos for cluster management, scheduling and resource isolation.Terraform for provisioning the infrastructure.Packer for automating the build of the base images.Apollo targets the following use cases: building an internal Platform as a Service (PaaS) that leverages Docker container runtimes creating large scale continuous integration pipelines using the Jenkins Mesos framework and managing and distributing big data workloads.Īpollo is built on top of the following open source components: The Capgemini engineering blog states that Apollo has been built to power internal microservice and big data platforms for Capgemini clients, and is now being open sourced to allow external developers to experiment with the platform. Capgemini are currently working on Apollo, an open source application platform built on top of the Apache Mesos cluster manager, which is designed to power next generation web services, microservices and big data platforms running at scale. ![]() During the tour, guitarist Chris Chasse left the band and was replaced by Zach Blair. This may be a corruption of 'six proud waters', a reference to the six jars of water that Jesus turned into wine at the wedding feast at Cana of Galilee, (John 2:6). ![]() Another possibility is the Jewish cross, a constellation over Israel. Alternatively, they could be the seven stars of Revelation chapter 1, verse 16, which are held in the right hand of Christ and explained as referring to the seven angels of seven of the early Christian churches. Other options include Ursa Major, or the seven traditional planets. The seven are probably the Seven Sisters, the Pleiades star cluster. Or this may refer to the rains of Noah's Flood. The April rainers refer to the Hyades star cluster, called the "rainy Hyades" in classical times, and rising with the sun in April the Greeks thought of the Hyades as inaugurating the April rains. Sharp records no variants in Somerset, but that Sabine Baring-Gould found a Devon variant "The nine delights" which Sharp glosses as " the joys of Mary". The nine may be an astronomical reference: the Sun, Moon and five planets known before 1781 yields seven and to this may be added the sphere of the fixed stars and the Empyrean, or it may refer to the nine orders of angels. This refers to the ten commandments given to Moses. These are the eleven Apostles who remained faithful (minus Judas Iscariot), or possibly St Ursula and her companions. Sharp states that there were no variants of this line. This refers to the twelve Apostles of Jesus, although the number has other meanings it may originally have referred to the months of the year, for example. The twelve stanzas may be interpreted as follows: Sharp discusses at length the similar Hebrew song " Echad Mi Yodea" (Who Knows One?), which accumulates up to thirteen and is sung at many Jewish Passover seders. What is your one-er-y? One is One ." However, Sharp records that "a form of this song, 'Green grow the rushes, O' is known at Eton", that it was printed in English County Songs, and that Arthur Sullivan had included a version in the Savoy opera The Yeomen of the Guard. What will you sing to me? I will sing you one-er-y. "Green grow the rushes, Ho" (or "O"), the chorus, is not included in Sharp's version, which has simply the call and refrain "Come and I will sing to you. Sharp states that the song was very common in Somerset and the whole of the West of England. īy 1868 several variant and somewhat garbled versions were being sung by street children as Christmas carols. The song's origins and age are uncertain: however, a counting song with similar lyrics, but without the 'Green grow the rushes' chorus, was sung by English children in the first half of the 19th century. The musicologist Cecil Sharp, influential in the folklore revival in England, noted in his 1916 One Hundred English Folksongs that the words are "so corrupt, indeed, that in some cases we can do little more than guess at their original meaning". The lyrics of the song are, in many places, exceedingly obscure, and present an unusual mixture of Christian catechesis, astronomical mnemonics, and what may be pagan cosmology. Seven for the seven stars in the sky, Six for the six proud walkers, Five for the symbols at your door, Four for the Gospel makers, Three, three, the rivals, Two, two, the lily-white boys, Clothed all in green, O One is one and all alone And evermore shall be so. I'll sing you twelve, O Green grow the rushes, O What are your twelve, O? Twelve for the twelve Apostles Eleven for the eleven who went to heaven, Ten for the ten commandments, Nine for the nine bright shiners, Eight for the April Rainers. The stanzas are clearly much corrupted and often obscure, but the references are generally agreed to be both Biblical and astronomical. There are many variants of the song, collected by musicologists including Sabine Baring-Gould and Cecil Sharp from the West of England at the start of the twentieth century. I'll sing you one, O Green grow the rushes, O What is your one, O? One is one and all alone And evermore shall be so. It is cumulative in structure, with each verse built up from the previous one by appending a new stanza. The song is not to be confused with Robert Burns's similarly titled " Green Grow the Rashes" nor with the Irish folk band Altan's song of the same name. It often takes the form of antiphon, where one voice calls and is answered by a chorus. It is sometimes sung as a Christmas carol. Green Grow the Rushes, O (alternatively "Ho" or "Oh") (also known as "The Twelve Prophets", "The Carol of the Twelve Numbers", "The Teaching Song", "The Dilly Song", or "The Ten Commandments"), is an English folk song ( Roud #133). Not to be confused with Green Grow the Lilacs. ![]() The observatory sits at an elevation of 2,736 feet and offers a 360-degree view. Knowledge of the magnitude of the largest earthquake that might be induced by a project, M MAX, is important for hazard reduction. Thus earthquakes disproportionately large compared with the associated industrial activity may be induced. The amount of stress released in an induced earthquake is not necessarily the same as the anthropogenic stress added because pre-existing tectonic stress may also be released. Challenges to constructing HiQuake include under-reporting which is ~ 30% of M ~ 4 events, ~ 60% of M ~ 3 events and ~ 90% of M ~ 2 events. Because it is currently impossible to determine with 100% certainty which earthquakes are induced and which not, HiQuake includes all earthquake sequences proposed on scientific grounds to have been human-induced regardless of credibility. Nuclear explosions induce earthquakes but evidence for chemical explosions doing so is weak. Activities that have been proposed to induce earthquakes include the impoundment of water reservoirs, erecting tall buildings, coastal engineering, quarrying, extraction of groundwater, coal, minerals, gas, oil and geothermal fluids, excavation of tunnels, and adding material to the subsurface by allowing abandoned mines to flood and injecting fluid for waste disposal, enhanced oil recovery, hydrofracturing, gas storage and carbon sequestration. It contains over 700 cases spanning the period 1868–2016. The Human-induced Earthquake Database, HiQuake, is a comprehensive record of earthquake sequences postulated to be induced by anthropogenic activity. ![]() Seeking to slash costs and raise quality at Young-Bunvalds Inc.
